Russian Analytical Digest

The Russian Analytical Digest (RAD) is a bi-weekly internet publication jointly produced by the Research Centre for East European Studies [Forschungsstelle Osteuropa] at the University of Bremen and the Center for Security Studies (CSS) at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich (ETH Zurich). It is supported by the German Association for East European Studies (DGO).

The Digest draws from contributions to the German-language Russlandanalysen, the CSS analytical network Russian and Eurasian Security Network (RES) and the Russian Regional Report.

 

The Russian Analytical Digest covers political, economic and social developments in Russia and its regions, and looks at Russia 's role in international relations.

No. 67: The Political Situation in Russia's Regions

This paper provides insights into Russia's regional politics, presenting four case studies. It addresses the general trends and special features of Russia's subnational authoritarianism, examines the political transformation of local government regimes through an analysis of elites and comments on the governor of St Petersburg. Furthermore, it assesses the implications of plans to redirect regional rents from oil and gas production from Tyumen Oblast to the federal center in Moscow.

No. 66: US-Russian Relations

This issue of the Russian Analytical Digest examines the impact of Russia-friendly policies by the Obama administration on both countries' relations, focusing on issues of arms control. The featured contributions look at the substance of US-Russia relations and discusses issues related to the follow-on negotiations for the Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (START). One of the author states that a new model of cooperation between both countries which would address the realities of the 21st century has not been established.
